On this day 101 years ago the first live sports event was broadcast on the radio.
Radio station KDKA in Pittsburgh broadcast a boxing match between Johnny Ray and Johnny Dundee. The sports editor for the Pittsburgh Daily Post, Florent Gibson, was the announcer for the event, which ended with the bout ending in a draw after 10 rounds.
Dundee, whose real name was Guiseppe Curreri, was known as the “Little Bar of Iron” who won 113 of his 321 bouts, knocking out 19 of his opponents. Dundee was inducted into the International Boxing Hall Of Fame in 1991.
