The opossum, or just plain possum as we tend to say, is, for a lot of folks, a symbol of Appalachia.
It seems some important people happen to like possums enough to put them in high places, like the White House. The photo you see is of President Herbert Hoover’s pet possum, named Billy.
It shared living quarters with the president’s pet raccoon, by the way.
