In the 1930s the Harlan County coal war, also referred to as “Bloody Harlan,” occurred. A series of strikes, bombings and gun battles between striking miners and coal company guards, it lasted from 1931-1939 and established the UMW in eastern Kentucky, as well and giving birth to the labor song “Which Side Are You On?”
