On this day in 1929 the Little River Lumber Company turned over 7,916 acres of timberland to the Great Smoky Mountains commission, largely ending a dispute over the right to log in the future Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
This was the largest single deal in land acquisition in either Tennessee or North Carolina.
The properties turned over to the commission included 3,600 acres in Cades Cove, 400 acres in White Oak Cove, 800 acres on the West Prong watershed, 1,100 acres on the eastern side of Sugarland Mountain and a tract of 1,300 acres on Meigs Creek.
