Luther Buckles was a criminal, well-known in Johnson City, Tennessee, in the 1920s. After two run-ins with the law in which two people were shot, he ended up at the infamous Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary, located in the rugged mountains of Morgan County. This prison was placed there to discourage inmates from escaping.
Mr. Buckles was not discouraged. In fact, he managed to escape in 1936 and stayed out for two years.
