On this day in 1948 the National Association for Stock Car Racing was incorporated. NASCAR went on to become one of America’s favorite sports.
The idea for an association came from Bill France, Sr., who saw how rules for racing varied from one event to another as well as the rise of dishonest promoters who would often steal prize money. France was the first president of NASCAR.
The first officially sanctioned NASCAR race came the next year, on June 19, 1949, at the Charlotte Speedway in Charlotte, North Carolina.
